In 2002, Children’s Hospital of Alabama retained Porter White & Company as its real estate consultant and broker to help plan and acquire land for the future expansion needs of the hospital. The work began with a careful analysis of trends in development and property transaction prices in all relevant locations. In 2003, PWCO started acquiring parcels of land around Children’s Hospital in the shadows of both the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Children’s existing campus.
Over the course of six years, PWCO acquired 25 parcels of land on four separate blocks along the 17th Street corridor to help better position the hospital for a northern expansion of its campus. Through forward thinking by Children’s board and management, Porter White & Company was able to quietly obtain highly sought after parcels at reasonable prices during a time when University Hospital was expanding in all directions. Long term planning by Children’s Hospital and Porter White & Company helped position the hospital for future growth and enabled it to obtain a campus well positioned in Birmingham’s important southside medical district.
